Whatishymenoplasty?
The hymen is a thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening. Its shape varies from person to person, but it's commonly a half-moon shape at the base of the vaginal opening. It can tear or stretch at different points in life — from tampon use, exercise, sports like horseback riding, or sexual intercourse — sometimes with minor bleeding.
Hymenoplasty, also called hymenorrhaphy, is the cosmetic repair, restoration, or reconstruction of the hymen. It's most often requested for cultural or religious reasons, since an intact hymen is treated as a marker of virginity in some cultures — though it's worth noting the hymen can tear from entirely non-sexual causes as well.
