Whatisoperativehysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy is a procedure in which a thin, lighted telescope with a small camera is passed through the cervix into the uterus, allowing the doctor to see the uterine lining directly. It can be used purely to look and diagnose, or — as operative hysteroscopy — to treat what's found in the same session.
Operative hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive gynaecological procedure that inserts an endoscopic lens through the cervix into the endometrial cavity, allowing the surgeon to directly treat a range of intrauterine conditions without any external incision.
Whenishysteroscopyindicated?
Whyishysteroscopycarriedout?
Exploring the cause of abnormal bleeding or severe cramping
Investigating the reason behind repeated miscarriages
Examining the uterine openings to the fallopian tubes, sometimes with a dye test to check for tubal blockage
Finding and removing small polyps or fibroids
Pinpointing abnormalities in the uterine lining for sampling and biopsy
Techniquesused
The electrode is only activated once it begins moving toward the cervix, for controlled precision
Adjusting the generator's settings lets the surgeon coagulate, cut, or vaporise tissue depending on the electrode used
Extra care is taken cutting the myometrium, especially near the corners and cervix, where it's thinner
The distension medium used to expand the uterus for visibility depends on the energy type — saline for bipolar energy, an electrolyte-free medium for monopolar energy
Fluid balance is monitored closely throughout the procedure for patient safety
